The third workshop of the ICANEPO program, aimed at digitizing the processes required for debt settlement between international companies or customers, was completed two weeks ago in Vienna, Austria. This workshop was the final one before the official project presentation in March 2025.

What is the ICANEPO project.

The ICANEPO project (International Court Application for European Payment Order) is an EU-funded initiative aimed at developing a standardized application for managing court cases related to the European Payment Order (EPO). The European Payment Order is a simplified judicial procedure designed for cross-border debt recovery within the European Union.

Purpose:
The ICANEPO project aims to create a core application for judicial authorities that will:

Comply with the European Payment Order Regulation.
Include interfaces to integrate national extensions (e.g., languages, court fees).
Facilitate cross-border electronic communication via e-CODEX (https://www.eulisa.europa.eu/Activities/Large-Scale-It-Systems/e-CODEX), as required by the Judicial Digitalization Regulation.

Participants:
Partners from Austria, Greece, Portugal, and the Netherlands are collaborating over a 24-month period to develop the application, ensuring it can be reused by other EU member states.

From Greece, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is responsible for server maintenance, while Stonewave, contracted by the university, is working on the application’s design and UI/UX optimization.
The Austrian Ministry of Justice leads the back-end development.
The Portuguese partners oversee final testing and debugging.

Goal:
The project addresses the need for EU member states to:

Comply with new requirements for electronic communication between judicial authorities and citizens.
Upgrade or implement technical systems supporting these processes.
